Nano Banana 2 Lite: When the Fastest Model Is Enough

Nano Banana 2 Lite is the fourth generation of Google's image models and the cheapest in the family. Which tasks its speed is enough for and how many tokens an image takes.

TL;DR. Nano Banana 2 Lite is the newest and fastest model in Google's family (technical name Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Image, released on June 30, 2026). It returns a picture in about four seconds and costs 3 tokens, the same as the first Nano Banana, released almost a year earlier. The ceiling is 1024 pixels, up to three references, ten aspect ratios. Lite is taken when you need many pictures fast, and for editing uploaded photos Nano Banana 2 is the better fit.

What "Lite" means in this family

By August 2026 Google has four generations of image models, and Lite is not "a cut-down version of something" but a separate profile: minimal latency under a large flow of requests. Google positions it exactly like that, as a replacement for the first Nano Banana in scenarios where throughput matters.

What it gives in practice: not "lower quality", but a different point on the "speed / price / ceiling" curve. Lay the family out along that curve and the choice stops being guesswork; we made a detailed breakdown of the generations in a separate article.

One more detail from Google's announcement: Lite came out straight in stable status, without a preview stage. That is rare for the family: the senior models went through months of preview.

A test on one prompt

We ran the same request (a poster with large Cyrillic lettering) through three generations in a row. The same conditions, one run per model:

Generation Cost Time Lettering in the frame
Nano Banana 2 Lite 3 tokens 4.1 seconds rendered correctly
Nano Banana 2 5 tokens 10.3 seconds rendered correctly
Nano Banana Pro 6 tokens 16.6 seconds rendered correctly

One run is not a benchmark, and on another prompt the numbers will differ. But the order of magnitude is confirmed by the platform's accumulated statistics: Pro has a median of about 26 seconds over 134 generations, the first Nano Banana about 10 seconds over 47. And an independent measurement on 240 images gives Lite a median of 3.8 seconds with a 95th percentile of 5.5, so Google's stated "four seconds" holds, while the "under two seconds" promise from the model card is not confirmed on real tasks.

The conclusion that follows: the speed gap between Lite and the middle model is about twofold, not an order of magnitude. The time saving is real on a flow of hundreds of pictures and almost unnoticeable when you generate three.

What Lite can do

  • A fixed 1K. Exactly 1024 pixels on the long side, with no 2K and 4K steps: Google states this plainly on the model page.
  • Ten aspect ratios: 1:1, 2:3, 3:2, 3:4, 4:3, 4:5, 5:4, 9:16, 16:9, 21:9. Vertical for stories and square for a catalog are there.
  • Up to three reference images in the Studio, each up to 7 MB, in PNG, JPEG and WebP formats.
  • Prompts in many languages, including English, without translation.
  • Large text in the frame: a sign, a heading, a price tag read well.
  • The invisible SynthID watermark is always applied and cannot be turned off: it is a common property of Google's image models, not a platform setting.

A prompt that works

Lite responds better to a short, specific request than to a long literary one. The scheme is the same as for the whole family: object, material and detail, light, background, frame format.

A matte white ceramic mug on a wooden table.
Close-up, the object takes up two thirds of the frame.
Soft diffused light from the left, a light shadow on the right.
The background is a blurred kitchen in light tones.
Format 4:5, vertical.

Don't do this: "a beautiful mug, super quality, 8k, ultra detail, masterpiece".

"8k" will not raise the resolution: the 1024-pixel ceiling is set by the model. "Beautiful" and "masterpiece" carry no information: the model has nothing to do with them and will substitute its own averaged idea. On Lite such empty words cost more than on the senior models: it is less able to pull meaning out of a vague wording.

For marketplaces: where 1K is enough

A seller's typical flow is dozens of uniform shots: the product on different backgrounds, infographics, color variants. Here Lite is in its place: go through twenty backgrounds in a couple of minutes and pick three.

For the final card, check the platform's requirements: if the minimum image size is above 1024 pixels, make the draft on Lite and regenerate the final frame in Nano Banana 2 at the resolution you need.

FAQ

How is Lite different from the regular Nano Banana 2, in one line? Twice as fast and two tokens cheaper, with a 1024-pixel ceiling instead of 4096 and three references instead of fourteen. For editing uploaded photos, take Nano Banana 2.

How much does one image cost? 3 tokens, the minimum price in the Nano Banana group. There are no resolution surcharges: there is only one step. How tokens are counted: the pricing page.

Which languages does it understand in the prompt? Many, including English: no translation needed.

Can it render lettering inside the picture? Large lettering, yes: in our test the heading rendered correctly. For small print, add it in an editor.

Is there a watermark? Yes, the invisible SynthID and provenance metadata are always added and cannot be turned off.

You can try it in the image Studio: the Nano Banana group, generation 2 Lite; the price and the estimate are visible before the run. All generations of the family are described in the Nano Banana card. No account? Create one: the welcome tokens are enough for your first pictures.
