Grok Imagine Without an X Subscription: Images and Video

Grok Imagine sits behind the X Premium subscription. We break down what the model can do with images and video, how its five video modes differ and how to work with it in Pixyn without the subscription.

TL;DR. Grok Imagine is an xAI generative model built into X. It makes both images and video, and it has five video modes, including editing a finished clip and extending it. Access normally goes through the X Premium subscription. In Pixyn the model opens without the subscription, at from 4 tokens per image and from 6 per video.

Why access is the question

Grok Imagine is not sold separately: it is part of the paid tiers of X. On the free tier generations are limited, and people hit the ceiling fast. That is why searches about the limits and how to get around them come up so often.

What Grok Imagine can do

Images

Two modes: generation from scratch by text and editing an uploaded image. The model is noticeably freer than many competitors in what it is willing to depict: this is its recognizable trait and the reason for some of the debate around it.

Video: five modes

Mode What we provide What for
From text a prompt a scene from scratch
From an image an image animate a frame
From a reference a sample + a prompt keep a style or an object
Editing a finished clip rework what was shot
Extension a finished clip shoot a continuation

The last two are rare. Most models can only create video, not refine an existing one. Extension is especially useful when a clip came out well but ends earlier than you need.

A video prompt: where to start

Video models respond poorly to a list of adjectives and well to a description of a scene with motion. Take this template and change one line at a time:

A woman in a dark coat walks down a wet night street, neon reflecting in the puddles.
The camera follows at waist level, smoothly, without jerks.
The light is cold, the source is the signs on the left.
Medium shot, vertical frame.

Three things give the most: what the subject does, how the camera moves, where the light comes from. Everything you do not describe the model invents itself, and differently in every take. More about how a description is built is in the card what a prompt is.

What matters about duration

The base price of a video includes a few seconds, and after that there is a surcharge for each next one. Modes with a reference and extension cost more than the basic ones because they are harder for the model. The number on the button is recalculated as soon as you change the duration, so the cost is visible before the run.

Not only Imagine: xAI text models

Under the Grok name there are not only generative models but also chat models: the catalog has five of them, and they are split into two types. Reasoning models spend time on a chain of thought before answering: this is noticeable on tasks like analyzing a long document or a step-by-step calculation. Non-reasoning models answer right away and cheaper, and they are given correspondence, short text edits and drafts.

There is also a multi-agent variant: it breaks a task into parts and solves them in parallel. It costs more than the rest and is justified only where the answer is truly composite.

The practical point for those who came for images: it is convenient to write the prompt in the chat next to it. Describe the task to a text model, ask it to put together a scene description, and move the result into the generation field.

The workflow that does not burn tokens

  1. Start with an image, not a video. Composition, character and style are cheaper to check on a still.
  2. Give the finished frame to the "from an image" mode. That way you already know what you are animating.
  3. The first clip at the minimum length. Make sure the motion and the camera are right, and only then make it longer.
  4. You liked the result but it is short? Extend it instead of generating again. That is what the separate mode is for.

When to use it

You need to extend or rework a finished clip; you need stylistic freedom that stricter models do not give; you want images and video from one model.

Try it. Create an account: you get 6 tokens at sign-up, and an image costs from 4, so the first try is available right away and without a card. A video costs from 6 tokens. Plans are on the pricing page.

FAQ

Do I need an X subscription? Through Pixyn, no. The model is connected through the API, and payment is the usual one.

Are there limits on generations? We have no limits on the number of generations: the cost is counted in tokens, like for the other models. How it works is in the card about tokens.

How is Grok different from others in terms of content "freedom"? The model really allows more than many competitors, but it has its own rules and they change. The rules of the platform you work through still apply.

Is Grok only Imagine? No, under this name there are also xAI text models, from fast ones to reasoning ones, and they are available too, in the chat models section.

Where can I see the primary source on the model? xAI publishes the lineup and versions of its models in its developer documentation, where you can also see which Imagine generations are current today.
